Our Thematic Areas of Focus and Programming

01

Health and Well-Being

The Acholi sub region has one of the highest HIV burdens in the country In Agago District where we are situated, HIV/AIDS is a significant concern, with 11% of the population testing positive, a higher rate than the national average of 7.2%, and the district has faced challenges related to conflict and cultural factors that exacerbate the issue. NUWOSO is certified by the Uganda AIDS Commission to implement HIV/AIDS activities in Uganda. Our health interventions focus on:

  • We engage in HIV prevention and awareness creation, HIV/AIDS care, treatment and support services, addressing underlying social, cultural and gender-based structural drivers of the HIV epidemic, malarial prevention, awareness creation and support, TB prevention awareness and case management, referral and home-based care services and support.
  • Partnered with religious leaders to incorporate health messages into
    sermons and community gatherings
  • Train ed community members to act as peer educators, who can share
    information and resources with their peers, particularly in vulnerable
    groups

We provide sexuality education and advocate for natural family planning methods.

We offer individual and group counselling, home-based care, rehabilitation, and recreational activities such as sports and drama for mental well-being.

Livelihood and Economic Empowerment

The overarching goal of the projects is to improve the well-being of individuals and our communities by providing them with the resources and opportunities to generate income and improve their quality of life. Our focus is on sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

  • Child Care and Protection: We raise awareness about child rights, advocating against defilement and forced marriages, supporting children in conflict with the law, facilitating access to education, supporting children who are survivors or victims of SGBV (health care support, legal aid support, mental health care support etc.)
  • Ending Discrimination and Violence Against Women and Girls: We empower and engage women and girls to become human rights champions. We focus on prevention and response by providing access to specialized services and supporting survivours with sustainable economic livelihoods.
  • We empower and engage community members in the protection of women and girls against SGBV. We promote women’s rights and gender equality and advocate to end SGBV. We engage stakeholders to challenge gender inequalities and SGBV and support survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) to seek justice, legal aid, healthcare, and psychosocial support.
  • Capacity Building: We conduct training of stakeholders and community resource persons to enhance response, advocacy and mobilization efforts.

Gender and Protection

NUWOSO is committed to protecting the rights of women, girls, children and youth. We do understand that addressing gender dynamics is crucial for effective protection programming, ensuring that interventions are tailored to the specific needs and vulnerabilities of both girls and boys and that all individuals are protected from gender-based violence and discrimination.

Environmental Conservation and Protection

We focus on raising community awareness about environmental issues, promoting sustainable practices, and implementing projects like reforestation, water conservation, and waste management while aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We advocate for sustainable environmental practices through:

  • Community Education Awareness: We create awareness of preserving biodiversity, protecting habitats, the danger of indiscriminate cutting of trees, and mitigating pollution. We organize workshops, presentations, and community meetings to educate people about environmental
    issues and conservation.
  • Promote sustainable practices: We encourage responsible resource use management, reducing waste, and adopting eco friendly
    technologies such as modern cooking technologies using renewable energies.
  • Community Participation: We encourage residents to participate in
    conservation activities, such as tree planting, clean-up drives, and
    monitoring projects
  • Climate Change Mitigation: We support planting native trees to restore
    degraded areas and enhance biodiversity

Disaster Management and Response

Our disaster management and response focus on reducing the potential impact of disasters by implementing measures t hat prevent or minimize disaster effects We respond to emergencies by providing:

  • Protection Services: We ensure the safety and rights of affected populations are protected.
  • Providing Relief Items: We deliver essential supplies to disaster-affected families such as medicines, food and clothing.
  • Emergency WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene): We implement hygiene interventions to prevent disease outbreaks during crises.

Coordination and Advocacy

We play a vital role in influencing policies and strengthening local capacity through:

  • Capacity Building of Local Partners: We train and support grassroots organizations.
  • Localization Agenda: We promote local leadership in humanitarian action.
  • Sexual Reproductive Health Education and Policy Influence: We advocate for policy changes and improved services.
  • Research and Documentation: We conduct surveys and studies to inform policies and interventions.
  • Policy Dissemination and Information Sharing: We ensure that relevant information is passed to the communities and stakeholders.
